CATCHING UP WITH POP-UP ARTIST JULIA LAWING

2018 marks the third year of GreenHill's Pop-Up Artist Residency! To date we have had 12 artists participate in our program, which brings local artists into the ArtQuest Studios to share their work with children and families over a 10 day period. Artists submit a project description of what they would like to do while in residence, with an emphasis on how their work will engage the variety of visitors we have at GreenHill. As we begin our third year of this program, we are catching up with some of our past Pop-Up Artist Residents to see what they are working on now.

GreenHill is currently accepting submissions for our Fall 2018 Pop-Up Residencies. To read more about the program and to apply, visit here.

Since completing her residency last spring, Julia Lawing has definitely been keeping herself busy. A lover of travel, Julia is using photos from recent visits to northern California, Charleston, SC, coastal Georgia and the mountains of NC to inspire her new works. She says about her paintings, “I have been working on a series inspired by trips to the beach and the lake with my four daughters, incorporating the figure into my landscape work”.

When she is not painting commissions or her own personal work, Julia keeps her schedule full with a variety of exhibition opportunities. She has exhibited with Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, at Elements in Vidalia, Georgia and with Alamance Arts in Graham, NC. She was awarded first place in the oil/acrylic painting category from Artoberfest with Mooresville Arts for her painting “Into a Wide Land”. Another of her works, “Sunset Shrimpers”, was purchased by Cone Health Cancer Center at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.

Recently, Julia was chosen for ArtPopCLT, where her painting, “Where My Help Comes From” was selected to go up on a billboard along Interstate 85 in the Salisbury area starting in January 2018. ArtPop utilizes donated billboard space to promote 20 selected artists and their work throughout the year.

Julia will be participating in the Spotlight on Art Show at Trinity School in Atlanta, a showcase of works in the Southeast for both avid art collectors and casual buyers. Check out Julia’s work at her upcoming show with Howard Bemus “Can’t See The Forest For The Trees” with the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center February 2- March 3, 2018.
