The First Annual North Carolina Competition of Green Hill Art Gallery, Inc. was presented at the Weatherspoon during July and August 1975. This competition was made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council with the aid of the National Endowment for the Arts, the United Arts Council of Greensboro, and the Weatherspoon Gallery facilities.
358 artists submitted 674 entries to the competition, representing a cross section of professional and amateur artists all over North Carolina. A total of 98 works by 76 artists were selected by Claude Howell and Charles Wyrick for exhibition in the Weatherspoon Gallery. The very first exhibit held at Green Hill portrayed the essence of those entries submitted, showing an unusual versatility and competence.
