Terra: A Landscape Survey

TERRA (July 25 - November 7, 2026) explores one’s experience of nature through the eyes of thirty of the state’s leading landscape artists. This major survey exhibition focuses on artists inspired by wild spaces untouched by development. National parks, ocean fronts, mountain hollers and wetland retreats are evoked in paintings, works on paper, and fiber art. Associated programs explore themes such the notion of public land and role of parks and national monuments in the survival of ecosystems with artist talks and lectures by guest speakers. Collaborations with The Piedmont Land Conservancy and Dance Project will enhance visitors’ understanding of our essential connection to the land.

Public Programming

Opening | Saturday, July 25 | 3:00 – 5:00 PM

Join artists for the opening of TERRA at GreenHill, a major survey exhibition exploring our connection to the natural world through the work of North Carolina’s leading landscape artists. Featuring paintings and works on paper inspired by national parks, coastlines, wetlands, and mountain landscapes, TERRA reflects on the beauty, complexity, and preservation of wild spaces. Through collaborative programming and artist-led events, the exhibition invites visitors to engage with themes of ecology, public land, and our shared relationship to the environment.

First Friday Musical Performance | Friday, August 7 | 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Join GreenHill Friday, August 7, from 6:00–7:00 PM for a performance by Nancy, Tad, and Keith, three song farmers harvesting their favorite numbers and serving them up with a side of vocal harmonies and heartfelt picking. Enjoy an evening of familiar tunes and rich musicianship in the galleries.

ArtBar | Terra Chroma | Wednesday, August 26 | 5:30 - 7:00 PM

Want to learn how to forage and build your own palette? In this 21+ class, participants will get a behind-the-scenes look at how the artist processed pigments for Stratum and Stone, explore handmade pigments created from North Carolina clay, and see the pigment-making process up close. You’ll also create a simple landscape painting using both natural and traditional pigments, led by a Greensboro landscape painter Katie Podracky. All levels of experience are welcome.

Artist Round Table | Wednesday, September 16 | 5:30 – 6:30 PM

Join artists from TERRA at GreenHill in the gallery for a roundtable discussion exploring the themes of the exhibition, including landscape, ecology, public land, and our evolving relationship with natural world.

Dance Project Performance | Friday, October 2 | 6:30 – 7:00 PM

Experience a dance performance in the gallery by Janice Lancaster during October First Friday, accompanied by Larry Weng performing, Boreal, an original piano composition by Michael Laurello. A choreographer and educator, Lancaster creates collaborative works drawing inspiration from ecology and cultural memory. Learn more: www.danceproject.org/
