GREENSBORO DOWNTOWN YOGA

A Flow Inspired by Barbara Ellis artwork - 'Re-entry I'

Greensboro Downtown Yoga owner Summer Sides sent us the following exercise inspired by the Barbara Ellis painting Re-entry I.

When her studio first opened its doors on March 1, Summer Sides had planned to regularly offer “IndieFit” programs - a movement and art collaboration in which movement experiences are inspired by visual and performing artists’ works. Edie Carpenter spoke with Sides about her vision for when her studios re-open:

EC:  When did you start thinking about connecting movement with artworks in your yoga practice?

I first got the idea for IndieFit and the collaboration between art and movement about 5 years ago. I was lying in a yoga class and a song came on that wasn't appropriate for savasana. That led me to think about how great live music would be in classes. And then my idea just grew from there. I was a dancer my whole life, and so expression through movement has always been part of who I am. And helping people experience that through this collaboration is powerful to me.

EC:  What do you think participants will get out of this kind of practice?

I think by bridging these two it can allow people to see both art and movement in different ways. It can make movement about expression. It can allow people to see art in a way that inspires them to know that they can do it too. By connecting the two it creates a synergy between two worlds that are often different and realize that we are all in fact very much the same.
