Earth, air, fire, and water nourishes the root of our artistic tradition. Through infinite combinations striving to attain an ever-shifting equilibrium, the elements shape and articulate the existence on this material plane and, by symbolic extension, the full spectrum of potential experience. It is in artistic expression that we manifest our modern mythology, with all its raptures, fears, hopes and dreams. The artist, functioning as a conduit, channels his or her own creative conception of these elemental forces into tangible form, harnessing inchoate imagination through material proxies such as clay, metal, paint and wood. In the crucible where skill and imagination marry, the artist transforms and is also transformed, becoming the fifth element - that of spirit, which animates, integrates and unifies the primal four. In the act of art making, with its capacity to reflect individual vision, and its impulse to instill that vision with the truth of the human condition, the elements are constantly being reborn with all the magical potency of antiquity. Through them, artists and viewers alike can unite in divide communion with the essential nature of things, finding balance and meaning within themselves along with a renewed sense of connection to the world.
