ELEANOR ANNAND

Unbound to one medium, I shift ideas from painting and printmaking into sculpture, installation, and video. This approach allows me to respond to form and material from multiple vantage points and encourages me to work energetically and untethered to expectation.

–Eleanor Annand

Eleanor Annand, Lunar, 2020, enamel paint on steel, 24 x 24 inches

Lunar is unique among the works by Eleanor Annand on view at GreenHill in NC Women Abstract Painters. The circular painting on steel projects several inches from the wall and resists categorization as a sculpture or a painting. Annand’s fluency working in multiple media is a hallmark of her creative practice.

The artist’s hand is evident in the application of white enamel over the smooth surface of the work. Painterly planes and valleys traverse the precise geometry of the circular form lending it a time-worn quality and rendering it convex.  The tondo’s striated surface is interrupted by a dark zone that eclipses its bottom edge. Opposing poles of dark and light, opaque and permeable, order and chaos are woven into an equilibrium that is both passionate and serenely ordered, that invites contemplation.

Interview

Edie Carpenter spoke to Ele Annand about the creation of Lunar

EC: Have you made circular works before and what attracted you to that format?

EA: I never have, which was part of what made me interested in it. Often my work is very angular and my lines are very sharp. With many of the works in this show I explored a softening in form.

EC: How was the steel form fabricated?

EA: There are three components to the form that are laser cut and then welded together. My partner, Justin Turcotte, is a skilled metal fabricator who builds all of my metal frames.

EC: The surface of this work is different from some of your other paintings on steel.  How has your approach changed?

EA: As I move between paintings and sculptures I find that the work starts to have a dialogue across media. This piece was the first metal painting I made in a year or so, and you can really see how the surfaces are more atmospheric and less tight.
