SHAPING CHANCE

GreenHill is proud to present SHAPING CHANCE, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Chieko Murasugi from April 10, 2026 to June 27, 2026. 

This mid-career retrospective comprises selections from the artist’s major series exploring  gesture, collage, fiber art, printmaking and will present all the works in her kimono series to date. Murasugi’s practice, enlisting principles of randomization and chance in the artmaking process, is explored in use of chance and randomization in her practice will be explored by the artist during her artist talk on Saturday, May 30. 

Born in Tokyo and raised in Toronto, Chieko Murasugi lived in San Francisco for two decades before relocating to the Southeast in 2012. Her work has been exhibited nationally in galleries and museums including the Mint Museum, Weatherspoon Art Museum, CAM Raleigh, and Spartanburg Art Museum and is held in public and corporate collections, including Duke University, and the Cities of Raleigh and Durham. Murasugi holds a PhD in Visual Perception (Experimental Psychology) from York University (Toronto) and an MFA in Studio Art from UNC Chapel Hill.

Save the date for an artist talk with Chieko Murasugi on Saturday, May 30, presented in conjunction with SHAPING CHANCE. Murasugi will speak about her multidisciplinary practice, spanning collage, fiber, printmaking, and her kimono series, and reflect on the role of chance and randomization in shaping her creative process. Join to hear directly from the artist about the ideas and methodologies behind the work on view. Free and open to the public.
