1996 - Andrew Martin Retrospective

June 21 - August 18, 1996

Green Hill presented a retrospective of work by Andrew Martin.  Born in France, Andrew Martin came to the united States at an early age.  He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and lived in Paris three years where he attended L'Ecole des Beaux Arts.  A long time resident of New York, Martin exhibited in shows at various galleries, including the Hansa and Rice Galleries.  During one of his exhibitions he met Gilbert Carpenter, at that time Chairman of the Departement of Art at UNC-G.  Carpenter invited Martin to come to the University as a guest insturctor for a semester.  A return invitation accepted by Martin in 1965 marked the beginning of a career and life in Greensboro, North Carolina. 

Artist, Richard Fennel, who studied and taught with Martin summed up his feelings saying: "Andy stressed obesrvation; 'Look....not just stare, but really look.' He emphasized the importance of working directly from life....'To see things as they really are, and to somehow interpret that vision through one's own sensibilities."
