Betty Watson: Retrospective
Five decades of production by Betty Watson are celebrated in this retrospective exhibition which present paintings, watercolors and drawings from the artist’s major series. Like the poet who waits “between sky and garden” as “shadows hesitate all day” Watson has applied a considerable amount of experimentation and study in order to achieve the luminous informality of her best work. (1) Her paintings share a quality of suspended calm, in which the familiar is viewed with a tender detachment. Their uncomplicated logic connects them to the world of observable facts yet they evoke a world both “real and unreal”.
