Winter Show Curator Pick #3

Before attending UNCG where he received his MFA, Juie Rattley III grew up in Columbus County watching his father restore classic cars. The long hours his dad spent working on his prized 1962 Chevy Impala are images Ratley has channeled into his latest series of paintings:  “Some of my fondest memories of the 1962 Chevy Impala was of my father working on it day and night, the completion of the project, and the weekend cruising.”  Rattley’s vivid palette and method of applying pure pigments directly to the ground celebrates the parallels between his painting process and his father’s passion for cars.  “My love for these classic vehicles continued ...

MARCH| ARTIST OF THE MONTH | SARAH TECTORDiffused sunlight floods the work surface and metalsmithing tools are scattered about purposefully. Sketches of jewelry concepts and silly buttons cover the corkboards that line the walls, and tiny drawers are filled with trinkets upon trinkets. This is a place where magic happens. NOVEMBER | ARTIST OF THE MONTH | WENDY ALLEN OF MISS FITTBy: Toni TronuThis weather confused month goes out to Wendy Allen of Miss Fitt, in Durham, NC. I chose Wendy because she takes a fun and imaginative approach to her art (and life). Her creative outcome is something really special while still being functional. When her box of goodies came in the mail I enjoyed trying EVERYTHING on. Best part? Her long scarves double as belts! Come on cold weather! I need to strut these fashionable mittens around town. Toni: Getting work “out there” can be a tricky task and sometimes it takes a lot of experimentation. It sounds like your first big break came when a local store ...

Winter Show Curator Pick #3

Communicating through emails and phones calls is efficient, but there is no comparison to meeting an artist in person. It is so nice to finally put a face to the artists that many of us at Greenhill spend hours researching. On left: artist Grant Penny On right: artist Heather Spontak and Laura Way at Odyssey Center for Ceramic ArtsDoing a pickup is a lot of fun, but it is also ...
